Hi Aj, can I ask you about Christmas Eve Midnight Mass? Lynn said she might be interested in going this year, so I'm trying to do a little bit of research. I know you've gone before, so where's a good place? And what happens if you're not Catholic? Thanks! ^_^

The last couple of years I've gone to my mom's church: http://www.sjcissaquah.org/. I've liked it there but the pastor is leaving in the next couple weeks so I'm not sure what Christmas Eve will be like this year. In the past it started around 10 PM with caroling, the actual service was later.

What happens if you're not Catholic?

Like most churches, all the Catholic churches I've been to are welcoming to outsiders. The only thing that is "Catholics Only" is communion, and even that isn't set in stone. There's more info on the issues involved in communion here: http://www.catholic.com/library/Who_Can_Receive_Communion.asp . Most churches will have missals and hymn books in the backs of the pews. The missal contains a rough "script" for the service, including when to stand, sit, and kneel. If you want to know more about what all will happen this is a good site http://www.bustedhalo.com/faith_guides/mass.htm . If you don't feel comfortable with something don't participate, at every church I've been to that is fine.

There's a lot of symbolism around Advent in the Catholic church. If you're curious about it the web has tons of info, but really you only need to show up to enjoy the candles, carols, and prayers of the service.
